Disadvantages of Air Fryers

Air fryers are one of the hottest kitchen appliances on the market today. They promise to be a healthier alternative to deep frying, and can cook up a variety of foods with little to no oil.

However, air fryers come with some disadvantages that you should be aware of before making a purchase.

There’s a learning curve

Yes, Air Fryers are fairly easy to use, but there is still a learning curve.

Air fried food, is not exactly the same as deep fried food. It can be a little harder to know when your food is done to your liking, and on top of that, the cooking time and temperature will be different than you’re used to.

Your foods may cook faster than you expect making preparing multiple dishes difficult.

Figuring these things out isn’t hard, but you may waste some food, or have less than spectacular results the first few times you use it.

They take up counter space

One of the biggest disadvantages of air fryers is that they take up a lot of counter space.

If you have a small kitchen, you might not have enough room to keep an air fryer on your countertop.

Even if you don’t have a small kitchen, if you don’t like to have a lot of appliances out, adding another appliance can be a disadvantage.

They take up cupboard space

Along with the space issue, if you store your Air Fryer in the cupboard, not having easy access could be an annoyance.

On the other end, if you store your small appliances in the cupboard, Air fryers can also take up a lot of cupboard space, especially if you don’t have one that is compact.

So, if you’re short on storage space, an air fryer might not be the best option for you.

They can be noisy

Air fryers can be loud.

The fan that circulates the air around is high powered, so it isn’t quiet. This may not be a problem for you if noise isn’t a subject you need to worry about, but if you have a baby, or if someone in your home has a different sleeping schedule than you, it may be.

So, how loud are they? They can vary by brand and model, so check the reviews of the one you’re looking at before you purchase. In general, they can be compared to the noise of a washing machine.

There are some foods you can’t cook in an Air Fryer

Not everything can be cooked in an Air Fryer.

Battered foods, or anything that’s heavy and wet.

Bacon is one you might think would work, but it would make a huge mess because the bacon grease will fly around and coat the entire inside of the fryer.

Also, foods that are very light, like greens won’t work, because the high powered fan will blow them around the fryer.

Limited Capacity

If you need to cook large portions at a time, an Air Fryer may not work well for you.

You are limited on the amount of food you can cook at one time.

Though they do come in different sizes, so you could get a larger capacity Air Fryer if you need, but it still may not be large enough for you.

Conclusion

All in all, Air Fryers have some disadvantages that you should be aware of before you buy one.

They take up counter space, they have a learning curve, and there are some foods you can’t cook in them.

However, if you’re willing to work with these disadvantages, an air fryer can be a great addition to your kitchen. For the other side of the topic, check out Are Air Fryers Worth It.
